Des Moines, the capital of IOWA. Two hours by car from my current residence of the city of Cedar Rapids. We've visited this place often but never experienced it before like we did in summer of 2018. Through this journal I will try to pen down my travel experience with all of you.
~~~Places you can visit in Des Moines, Iowa~~~
State Capitol Building
IOWA’s state capitol building is main attraction in Des Moines according to me. You just can't miss it. It's absolutely stunning. The architectural design of the building, the area filled with green trees, historical statues and of course the gorgeous 23 carat gold dome. It also offers a panoramic view of the city's downtown. All together, it's complete eye-catching and very photogenic.
Unfortunately for us, we never got the chance to enter the building. That’s because we always visited the place on Sunday. The capital building is open for tourists, throughout the week ( Mon to Fri 8 am to 5 pm, Sat 9 am to 4 pm ) except Sunday. So, my suggestion would be to plan your trip on Saturday so that you can take a tour of the capitol building. (It's in our bucket list as well). As I said we went on Sunday so we couldn't enter the building but we took a walk all around the building and breathe it's natural beauty and captured some stunning photographs of the building and it's surrounding.
Pappajohn Sculpture Park
After visiting capitol building , fasten your seat belt and head towards Pappajohn Sculpture Park through downtown Des Moines.
It's a park filled with different shaped sculptures. This park features artwork by 22 of the world's most celebrated artists. Take a walk, sit for sometime and just look around. If kid's are with you then let them play for sometime.
Robert D Ray Asian garden
It's a small Chinese garden, with a Pagoda on the banks of Des Moines river. Nothing much to see here yet garden is beautiful in it's own way.
-
Des Moines river trail
We started walking the trail by Asian garden and walked through to the Women of Achievement pedestrian bridge.
This location is best to get a view of the beautiful downtown and sunset or sunrise is the ideal time of the day to do that, I mean during the golden hours. It's simply magical, with the mystical music of the river slowly flowing down beneath your feet, the sun playing hide and seek behind the downtown buildings and it’s rays painting the downtown in crimson red, I bet you don't want to get away from this location.
Now if you have some extra time in your hand then don’t miss the shopping fun and some mouth watering foods.
-
Jordan Creek Center
Don't miss Iowa's largest shopping mall in West Des Moines, If you are bored shopping from your local malls n shops then this is the ultimate place for you.
Popular Indian Restaurants
Nothing is complete without food, and my greedy Indian taste buds just can’t be relaxed without Indian food. “Persis Biriyani Indian Grill” is our most favorite Biriyani destination in Des Moines. It is closed on Tuesday. Another restaurant named “Paradise Biriyani Pointe” is also good for good Indian food and biriyani. Moreover, Paradise offer lunch buffet and you will find many choices in their lunch buffet. Paradise is closed on Monday.
